Please note that the Clubhouse and Changing Rooms remain closed.

Please Use the Washing and Sanitising Equipment Provided

We are opening our Green for Social Distancing Play from Saturday 23rd May.

Playing conditions follow Bowls England and Government advice and include the need to pre-book a rink.  Full details are on  our website page Social Distancing Bowls – Playing Arrangements.

Hi Members,

With the changes in Government guidelines we are allowing limited opening of our facilities.

The clubhouse and washrooms will remain CLOSED but the tennis courts will be open for members from today in accordance with the LTA guidelines. Bowls & Croquet are still awaiting clarification of details from their association. Bowls are planning towards a limited opening of the green on Saturday 23rd May whilst Croquet plan to open under restricted conditions on 18th May based on advice from the Croquet Association.

Details of the limitations will be issued by each section as details will differ for the different sports, but they will have the common theme of the safety of the members and the maintenance of the social distancing. We ask all our members to abide by the instructions and also ensure that you remind other members if you are concerned about their interpretation. A full risk assessment is being undertaken by the various sections, and please note the club will not hesitate to close the facilities again should the guidelines be broken or circumstances change.

Enjoy your sport BUT KEEP SAFE

Ken Homewood, Simon Charrington and Sue Wells

Ember Sports Club Update to All Members

Dear Members,

We hope that this post finds you and your families well. We have been eagerly waiting for the Prime Minister to give some indication about when we can re-open the lawns and the tennis courts. The information regarding our sports  is still extremely unclear and hence we need to now wait for our Governing Bodies to give us precise instructions on when and how we can open for outdoor play. We can then plan and put practical solutions in place.  We will let you know as soon as possible, but in the meantime all lawns, rinks and courts remain closed.

Best regards

Sue Wells and the Management committee

Keeping It Green

To Get a Green To Look Like This
You Need to Spend Time Doing This

Just to let you know that a small group of volunteer workers are keeping our Green in playable condition while the club is in lock-down. It is being cut three times a week, aerated once a week and sprayed & irrigated regularly to feed, weed and treat it against disease and fungal attack. The pictures above were taken over last weekend. Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen.

Mike would appreciate any additional help he can get, particularly with the spraying and irrigation. It’s not too physical but does require a methodical approach and a bit of patience. Working on the Green is allowed under the Government rules so, if you fancy a break from your own four walls, why not give him a call on 020 8398 4549.

Coronavirus – Club Statement

Consistent with current government and LTA guidance (20/03/20), the clubhouse at Ember Sports Club is closed from today until further notice.  This includes visiting the washrooms and changing rooms.

Our tennis courts, remain open for play, while plans for the activities on the Bowling Green and the Croquet Lawn will be continually reviewed by the section committees.  This may change at short notice.

Guidelines on playing tennis will be emailed to all members and posted on the tennis section of the website.

Tennis members may bring visitors to play, but they must ensure these visitors respect the social distancing guidelines and wash their hands.  Please ask them to pay the visitors fee to you, and please transfer via BACS and using the reference Guest fee.

Non-members, unaccompanied by a member, wishing to play tennis are requested to contact for further details. If any member of Ember Sports club does get infected, please inform us at

COVID-19 (The Corona Virus)

Some information from EIBA which is relevant to all members

Getting to the Root of the Problem…

Work started this morning to install an effective root barrier to prevent further damage to the Green from the neighbouring Leylandii hedge. The work will take a couple of days and involves digging a narrow trench, cutting existing roots and installing the barrier to prevent further ingress. Some of the larger roots can be seen laid on the tarpaulin. Afterwards new turf will be laid in readiness for play next season.

BOWLS BUDGETS                                                                                                                             DAVE BARDSLEY

We have had a good year to date due to successful hosting of outside events (NWS finals and Surrey competitions), our own fundraising efforts and reduced expenditure on green and equipment maintenance.  Many thanks are due to the helpers, supporters and attendees at these events and those who give their time to maintain the upkeep of the club.  We anticipate making a good surplus this year and Committee have agreed to use this to offset our depreciation charges in future years’ budgets, thereby reducing pressure on next year’s and future budgets.
Nevertheless the absence of any external hosting of events next year together with general increases in costs has still left us with a potential budget shortfall for next year.  To address this Committee have agreed a modest £1.00 increase in subscriptions for next year to £84.00 (£168.00 including Sports Club subscription) for full members.  New members fees will be discounted to £45.00 (£129) for their first year.  Match fees will also increase to £3, the first increase in several years, to help offset increased catering costs.
Committee is constantly looking for cost savings and other sources of revenue, including sponsorships.  If you are aware of any potential sponsors or advertisers, please let Ken Homewood know.  In the meantime, please join and use it where you can for any internet purchases, including travel and holidays.  The few members who are currently using it raise about £80 for us each year; please join with them.

We have damage to the green caused by the tree roots from a neighbouring garden. We have contacted the neighbour but at the moment we have not had a positive response. We have decided that we have to act as delay will only increase the damage, so work will start in mid-February so that the green will be playable for the beginning of the season.
