About Ember

Ember Sports Club was founded in the mid-1930s following the completion of part of what was then known as the Pound Farm Estate. The grounds form an “island” of land between the residential houses in The Drive and Grove Way, Esher, which was generously donated by the housing developers for the benefit of the neighbourhood.  It is a primary, multi-sports club, serving the Elmbridge area.

Initially a Tennis Club with a thriving social life (curtailed a little by the Second World War), the Club later expanded; first in 1949 with the formation of a Drama Group – THE EMBER PLAYERS; later with a Bowls  Section (1950) and a Croquet Section (1989).

Currently we have nearly 400 members, spanning the generations, who enjoy one or more of our sports sections, as well as our thriving Social Section.  We welcome complete beginners to County players, and have expert coaching on hand in all our sports.  You can play simply for pleasure, compete in our in-house contests or join a team, host another club in a match, and travel around Surrey and the South East representing the Club at local and county levels, playing the game you love.

Our Social Section currently organises on line Yoga sessions, weekly Bridge, Quiz Evenings and many other social get-togethers. You can sit and relax with other members and friends in our sociable and well-stocked bar area which is currently undergoing has recently undergone refurbishment and upgrading. with new flooring and furniture, partly funded by Surrey County Council’s Members’ Community Allowance Funding scheme. We have also just installed a smart new terrace area overlooking the tennis courts, an accessibility ramp, and bifold doors, opening the Clubhouse up on warm days.

The clubhouse is available for hire, to members only, for social functions and we have a fully equipped kitchen.  Please contact secretary@embersportsclub.org.uk

You may want to take up a specific sport, but joining Ember opens up the opportunity to sample other activities too –  where else can you play tennis and build the set for the next Ember Players production?

The Club is essentially run by volunteer members, who take care of the day to day upkeep of the clubhouse and grounds. The premises are owned by a private company, Ember Club Limited, the sole purpose of which is to own the land. The majority of shares in the company are held on trust for the benefit of the membership as a whole. A Management Committee oversees all decisions and policies and is represented by members from all Sections.

The Club is open daily for all members.  The car park entrance is adjacent to 2 Grove Way, KT10 8HL, off Ember Lane.  There is a further keypad-controlled pedestrian entrance at 21a The Drive.
