Getting the word out!

Let us know if you see any of our members out and about displaying their brand new Ember Sports Club car stickers!

New Shuttering

Assisted by a generous #SurreyMCA grant, sponsored by Cllrs Peter Szanto & Nick Darby, Ember Sports Club has new security shutters, replacing the broken ones.

Once we can re-open the bar, we invite members & their guests to celebrate this attractive new installation by Tri Door!

Mike Lambert

We are extremely saddened to report our dear friend, Mike Lambert, passed away yesterday morning. Mike has been an active member of the Croquet section from the early days and has contributed so much to the club, in terms of volunteering as well as his croquet knowledge, and of course, his great sense of fun and companionship. We will miss him hugely.

Given the current restrictions, there will be a small family funeral, but there are plans for a memorial service sometime in the Autumn.

We hope to post an obituary in the next few days.

Clubhouse Refurbishment Update

We are delighted to announce that we shall soon receive a grant under the Members’ Community Allowance funding scheme of Surrey County Council, towards the cost of our new security shutters. This has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of Councillors Peter Szanto and Nick Darby.

Over the coming months, following approval by the recent Management Committee meeting, we shall be implementing this project, together with new flooring and internal doors, as well as considering what additional projects we may be able to undertake, including new seating and lighting.

CLUBHOUSE REFURBISHMENT

Phase 1 has been approved by the Management Committee. Phase 1 includes replacing the carpeted areas in the clubhouse & committee room, replacement of the sliding door to the committee room with glazed French doors, & replacement of the bar shutters with new easy-to-operate motorised ones. The intention is that this work will be completed in readiness for the summer season.

Phase 2 looking at improvements to the furniture & décor is being evaluated and costed for discussion in the next Financial Year.

The CRG is also looking closely at various potential sources of external grants and are hopeful that one grant which is being processed will be available for Phase 1

If you would like to offer any input on the club refurbishment please contact Julian Callow (juliancallow@btinternet.com).

COFFEE MACHINE

A speciality coffee machine has been installed in the clubhouse in response to members’ request. It is £1/cup and there is a cash box with the machine. Enjoy

YOGAThere will be no yoga class at the clubhouse on Friday mornings for the next 3 weeks.  The class will resume (9-10am) on Friday 28th February.

DOUBLE YELLOW LINES

Double yellow lines have been added to Grove Way opposite the entrance to our car park which will overcome the restricted access for emergency vehicles that had been our concern. This request was initiated by us some years ago and by perseverance we have succeeded.  Nick Plaut in particular has been Ember’s driving force.

Club Sign

CLUB SIGN

You will also see that we have had a new sign installed in the car park advertising the club and its facilities. It is part of our drive to raise the club’s profile.

BAR CLEANING

John Raeside, our bar manager, is updating the bar cleaning rota for the coming season and needs some additional volunteers. This is a light duty that is not gender discriminatory and is a Sat or Sun morning job on a six-week rota. A GOURMET DINNER AT FAWLTY TOWERS – a homage – Friday 13 and Saturday 14 March This is selling fast, so please see booking details in the Social section if you wish to come.

This, of course, means that rehearsals are taking place in the clubhouse on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays each week with the exception of Wednesday 12th instead of Tuesday 11th February and Wednesday 4th instead of Tuesday 3rd March. Thank you for your co-operation in keeping noise levels down when coming into the clubhouse.

200 Club Draw                                                                                MALCOLM BAIRD

Many thanks to all those who have already contributed to Ember’s 200 Club. Your support is much appreciated. For those who intended to buy some numbers but have not yet got around to it, please do so promptly as the first draw for 2020 is later in February.  Each number that you buy costs just £12 for a whole year and all profits go towards club improvements. I was hoping that we would beat or at least equal last year’s record total of 200 numbers sold but there is still some way to go. With this in mind I have optimistically attached an application form at the end of this Newsletter

The Awesome Foursome Strike Again

The Awesome Foursome (Plus 1)

Having won the Senior 4s Surrey Championship Jackie Cornwell (Lead), Lorna Kilpatrick (2), Mary Green (3) and Sylvia Jones (Skip) went on to the Bowls England National Championships at Leamington Spa.  The ladies were representing and playing as the Surrey team along with their Super-sub, Linda Pillman, who also attended in her rôle as Junior Vice-President of SCWBA (Surrey County Women’s Bowling Association).

The first round was a tight game until the last few ends when the Awesome Foursome pulled away and beat Dorset 18-9.  A satisfying win, especially as two of the opposing team had just won the National Triples Title.

In the next round the Ember ladies were against Sussex.  Another very strong team with two players who had just won the National Senior Singles and Senior Pairs Titles.  Our ladies were several shots down during most of this game but clawed back to go into the last end only 2 shots down, eventually losing by just 1 shot on the tightest measure.  Sussex later progressed to the Final but lost to Bedfordshire.

What a great journey!  Reaching the Last 16 of a National Championship is pretty good!  Congratulations all round.

Something for the Weekend? Try a Festival of Bowling.

Ember is hosting the finals of the North West Surrey Bowls Association competitions on Bank Holiday Sunday.  Come along and see the best bowlers in the area competing at the highest level.

If you are a new bowler, or even a non-bowler, this is the occasion to look and learn and enjoy the spirit of competition.  More experienced bowlers can re-new acquaintances and, maybe, pick up a few tips.

Competitions begins at 9.30am and continues until the evening with 14 matches in the programme.  Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Ember BC feature in the Ladies League semi-final at 9.30am and will hopefully progress to the final at 2.00pm.  They will be followed by Jackie Cornwell & Mike Cutts defending their mixed pairs championship at 4.00pm.

COME ALONG TO SUPPORT AND ENJOY.

Come down to the Ember Open Day!
