Ember vs.Cambridge Park

Ember played an Indoor match against Cambridge Park IBC over the weekend. Less than half the Ember team are regular indoor bowlers yet we put up a spirited fight in getting a 2-2 draw in rinks and losing overall narrowly by 65-57. Chris Axton, making his indoor debut, performed admirably and we were lent 2 members of the Nottage family by the opposition for the day, which helped our cause.
The team all encountered massive traffic delays in getting there meaning the start was delayed by half an hour. Nevertheless we enjoyed a good match and a hearty meal afterwards with our opponents who provided great hospitality on the day.

Down by the seaside, sifting sand…

A lovely daytrip down to the seaside for Ember Bowls Section! We visited our friends at Eastbourne Bowling Club and (unlike last year) the weather held and made for a glorious day.

JG's External Competitions Report #2

John Garland writes:
SURREY LADIES’ JOHNS TROPHY
Congratulations to Linda Pillman who has returned to the Surrey Johns team after two matches as a travelling reserve..
SURREY COMPS – LADIES
Our ladies have had a successful season in the County Championships and we still have 2 entries left in the competitions –
Jackie Cornwell & Mary Green play their quarter final match against a pair from Milford this evening at Horley and Jackie is still in the 4 Wood Singles where she plays Johns skip Margaret Smith at Sutton, her home green.
In the Fours both of our teams lost in the last 32 and in the Triples Jenny, Val & Linda lost in a very close match to our other triple Jackie, Mary and Sylvia who were defeated in the last 16. We almost managed to get a quarter finalist in the Pairs but both Lorna and Val & Jenny and Linda lost in the last 16.
Unfortunately our entrants in both the Champion of Champions Singles and the Officers Cup have been beaten.
SURREY COMPS – MEN
Ray Croucher lost in the last 64 at West Wimbledon. in the Champion of Champions Singles.
RD – MIXED LEAGUE (3 RINKS)
Since the last report we have had a 10-0 win against Sutton, an 8-2 win against Chessington which included a 42-6 victory on one of the rinks and an 8-2 defeat against Cheam leaving us in a mid table position.
NWS MEN’S DOUBLE RINKS LEAGUE
After 2 wins and 2 losses we welcomed our neighbours Esher and they started well and built up an early lead of 10 shots but we rallied well and won the match 46-35 with both rinks being successful, 25-18 and 21-17.
NWS MIXED LEAGUE – DIVISION 1
After losing our first three matches we have won the last three, 21-11 at Sunbury, 19-14 on an excellent rink at West Byfleet and 15-11 at home v Knaphill.

NWS LADIES LEAGUE
There are two leagues based on location and our ladies are currently top of their league with four wins and a draw away at Oxshott who are likely to be the main opposition in their league. Oatlands Park lead the other league and the two league winners play each other for the trophy on the NWS Finals Day at Chertsey on Sunday 26 August.
NWS INDIVIDUAL EVENTS
We are still represented in all nine of the NWS Individual competitions that we entered –
Men’ Pairs: Dave & Dick are into the last 16 (L16)
Men’s Triples: Dave, John C and Dick are in the Quarter Finals (QF)
Ladies Singles: Both Linda and Jackie are in the QF
Ladies Pairs: Both Jackie & Linda and Lorna & Mary are in the L16.

CORONATION TRIPLES
We have four triples entered – best of luck to all of them.
MEN’S SURREY AREA 2 TOP FOUR

National Croquet Day – May 13th

Come down to Ember Sports Club on the 13th May to try out the historic game of Croquet. We have a team of experienced players able to help and show you the ropes – no experience necessary!
Save the date!

Timber!

One of our tennis courts will be out of action for a little while!

A large oak tree in a adjacent garden to our club (belonging to one of our long-serving members Val Chicken) fell down of its own accord yesterday and into our tennis courts!
All the branches had already been trimmed off it some years ago after it became diseased so it was not a particularly pretty sight but it was a well known landmark.
The remains of the tree will be removed in the middle of next week but the court surface has been damaged and so court 6 will not be usable until the surface has been repaired and the artificial grass surface relaid.
