Beetle Drive

The bowls section ran a very enjoyable Beetle Drive on Friday attended by 44 members. Our Chairman Ken was an excellent MC who (nearly) managed to control the noisy players! Congratulations to Iain Gregg and Sue Pettit who were winners on the night of some wine and a beetle mug (of the Volkswagen type!).

VOTING OPEN TO DETERMINE 2018 MALE BOWLERS OF THE YEAR

Bowls England has today opened the voting to determine the 2018 Male Bowler of the Year and Young Male Bowler of the Year Award, sponsored by Taylor Bowls and Bowls International respectively.

Bowls England Chief Executive Tony Allcock MBE said: “We are pleased that Taylor Bowls and Bowls International continue to sponsor these highly respected and prestigious awards and we thank them for their support.”

Sian Honnor, editor of Bowls International, said: “It is important to recognise excellent achievement and the shortlisted players are those that stood out in a strong field.

“Congratulations to all those featured and we look forward to announcing the winners at the Bowls England Men’s Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes which is always a highlight of the bowling calendar and a chance to celebrate the season in style.”

The Ember Players present “Bothered and Bewildered”

“Bothered and Bewildered” is a bittersweet comedy about two daughters whose mother, Irene, is living with Alzheimer’s disease. While the girls are losing their mum in spirit (if not in body), Irene is forming a new relationship with an invisible companion, the late romantic novelist Barbara Cartland, who helps her write a ‘memory book’ revealing profound secrets she has never shared – even with
her family.

The Ember Players are linking with ‘Homelink’ for this play, a Twickenham based charity staffed by nurses and dementia-trained volunteers to provide a safe, positive environment for patients on a regular basis.

🎭 The Ember Players production of “Bothered and Bewildered” is playing at The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames, from Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th May at 8pm.

🎟 Tickets are £13 and are bookable via www.ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers or by phoning 07752-655087.

Seven Centuries of Bowls

A great find from one of our bowlers, Sylvia. An old issue of Country Life from 1972, with a fantastic article on the great game throughout the ages.

Get your tickets for the Ember 200 club!

Numbers may now be purchased for Ember’s 2019 “200 Club” which starts on 1st January.  All profits will go to Ember Sports Club and during 2018  I am delighted to report that, thanks to our members’ generosity,  a total of 198 tickets were purchased and we raised over £1,000.  Our most sincere thanks to all those many members who have participated!
For 2019 the basis of the allocation of the prize money will remain the same as for 2018.  There will be three prizes for each draw and draws will be made bi-monthly, the first one being made in February.  The total prize money for 2019 will be paid on the same basis as the present system (50% of the revenue). Thus if 200 numbers were purchased the pay-outs would be as follows (N.B. the prize value would be decreased or increased proportionately if fewer or more numbers are sold):
5 bi-monthly draws (February, April, June, August, & October) with prizes of:
1st    £100
2nd     £50
3rd     £20

1 Jackpot draw at Christmas with prizes of:
1st    £200
2nd   £100
3rd     £50

Do please support the Ember 200 Club –  the cost equates to just £1 per month per number purchased.  If you would like to have a particular number(s) please indicate this on the form.  If this number(s) has already been sold you will be allocated an alternative number(s). The sooner you apply the more likely you are to have your choice of numbers!  And the good news is that there is no limit to how many numbers you can buy!
An application form is attached which please complete and return to me with your payment (either cash or cheque payable to “Ember Sports Club 200 Club” please).  If you have any queries please telephone me on 020 8398 4622 or e-mail me on malcjen@ntlworld.com.

A picture from the Ember Ladies 2018 Christmas Lunch. Cheers!

Games Night 2018

Some photos from last night’s Bowls section games evening at Ember. It was a close set of matches across a range of games, but the ‘dream team’ of Pat O’Hagan, Mike Cutts and Louise Griffith pipped the others to the post and took 1st place by a third of a point – congratulations to the winners!
Thanks to all for taking part and special thanks to Dick Jones, Linda Pillman, Ken Homewood and all who organised the evening and provided some great food and drink.

Ember Big Band Masterclass!

A great feature this week in the Surrey Advertiser about the amazing Ember big band masterclass that took place at Ember Sports Club ahead of the band’s upcoming Christmas concert at Claygate Village Hall.
They were also joined by an extra-special guest, Louise Clare Marshall, singer with the Jools Holland Orchestra! Here’s a copy of the article and some pics from the masterclass.

Ember featured in October's Bowls International Magazine

Our very own greenskeeper extraordinaire Mike Cutts is featured in October’s issue of Bowls International, discussing his performance green keeping approach and the improvements made since he took over in 2013.
Great work Mike!
