NORTH WEST SURREY INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS – SUNDAY 26 AUGUST
We had nine ‘teams’ in the semifinals this year which is by far Ember’s best performance in these competitions. After some tough semifinals we merged with 6 finalists including both pairs in the Mixed Pairs Final. – TIMES OF FINALS ARE –
9.30 – MIXED PAIRS – Dave & Linda v Jackie & Mike – an all Ember Final
10.00 – LADIES LEAGUE SEMIFINALS – If we qualify
1.00 ish – LADIES SINGLES – Linda Pillman
1.00 ish – LADIES TRIPLES – Pat, Lorna and Val
1.30 – LADIES LEAGUE FINAL
4.00 ish – MIXED TRIPLES – Jackie Cornwell, John Garland and Mike Cutts
4.00 ish – MIXED FOURS – Dave Bardsley, Sylvia Jones, Linda Pillman and Dick Jones
LADIES LEAGUE – The top two teams in both of the leagues qualify for the semifinals. There is one match to go and the runners-up place in our group is believed to be between ourselves and Ashford – a win tomorrow may be enough!. We should know our fate either Tuesday or Wednesday.
CHERTSEY BC are hosting the finals this coming SUNDAY, 26th AUGUST (Bank Holiday weekend) so put this date in your diary and enjoy a good day’s bowling with plenty of Ember interest. Lunch will be available to purchase but you may need to be there by mid morning to order it. The bar will be open throughout the day.
RACAL DECCA MIXED LEAGUE
We have won 6 and lost 5 matches and are around 5th place of the 14 clubs in the league. There are 2 more matches to play – Home v Malden Lime Grove and Away at Oxshott.
NWS MIXED LEAGUE – DIV 1
We finished with 7 wins and 7 losses and probably finished in 4th or 5th place out of the 8 teams. Chertsey and Sunbury will be relegated and will be replaced by Bishop Duppas and a second Egham team. As a result I would expect the league to be stronger next year.
NWS MEN’S DOUBLE RINKS LEAGUE
Our final position was as high as we could have realistically achieved and finished in 5th place of the 7 clubs having won 5 and lost 7 matches. In the penultimate match we lost to Esher by 1 shot due to their skip trailing the jack on the last bowl of the match, otherwise we would have won by 3 shots. Our last match saw us beating Chertsey by 7 shots winning on both rinks, a rare occurrence (19-13 and 23-22) to finish the season on a high.
I am most pleased that Iain Gregg and Nick Burges have played in several matches and are now very much part of the squad for the league. Hopefully there will be more recruits next year. This is a step up from the friendly matches but nothing that promising beginners should be afraid of and it is great competitive experience.- if in doubt, ask Iain and Nick.
Our triple of Adam Willson, Ray Croucher and Mike Cutts reached the semifinal with a 1 shot win against Imber Court ‘A’. In the semifinal they beat Imber Court ‘B’ 14-12 with John G subbing for Adam Willson who had a longstanding commitment for that day. In the final on Finals Weekend Sunday morning they will play the strong West Wimbledon ‘A’ team who were 18-17 winners over Hook & Southborough.
EXTERNAL COMPS COORDINATOR NEEDED
After several years I shall be standing down from this role at the end of the season but continuing as NWS delegate so a replacement (either gender) is required for next season. The role does not have to be done in the detail that I have chosen to do it and it will be up to my successor to decide how they wish to cover the role. A report to the AGM and an update for committee meetings (you do not have to attend) is the main requirement of the role.
