JG’s External Competitions Report #3

Unfortunately Jackie Cornwell and Mary Green lost in the quarterfinals of the Ladies Pairs and Jackie lost in the last 16 of the 4 Wood Singles at Sutton.  No Leamington this year but our Ladies are to be congratulated on some excellent matches against strong opposition.

Since the last report we have had a 7-3 home win against Carshalton. This was followed by Malden Lime Grove cancelling our home match at short notice. In such circumstances we would normally be awarded the win but we were asked to arrange a new date and this has been done for Saturday 25th August. This raises an interesting point as presumably any side in contention for the title can claim not to be able to raise a team if they cannot field a strong side in the knowledge that they would be able to re-arrange the match – THIS RULE SHOULD BE EXAMINED AND AMENDED SO IT CANNOT BE ABUSED. This was not the case here as we are mid table and Malden LG are near the bottom.

We lost on both rinks at Chertsey to finish the first half of the season with 3 wins and 3 defeats and then lost at home very convincingly to Bishop Duppas who sent a strong team. We rallied well to win on both rinks on a very fast green at West Byfleet. Our next two fixtures are challenging home matches against Egham and then Weybridge, the top two clubs in the league.

After losing our first three matches we won the next three, 21-11 at Sunbury, 19-14 on an excellent rink at West Byfleet and 15-11 at home v Knaphill before losing 12-16 at home to Chertsey.  This left us with 3 wins and 4 defeats at the halfway stage.  The second half started well with an excellent 26-10 away victory at West End followed by an 11-17 defeat against Egham.  Sunbury are bottom and likely to be relegated but the teams in 4th to 7th places are very close and 1 of 4 teams will be relegated.  There are 5 more matches to be played and 3 wins should be enough to secure our safety.

There are two leagues based on location and our ladies are currently top of their league with 5 wins 1 draw and 2 defeats.  There are 4 matches to play and 3 wins may be sufficient for us to win our group especially if 2 of them are against Ashford and Bishop Duppas, our main contenders.  Oatlands Park lead the other league and the two league winners play each other for the trophy on the NWS Finals Day at Chertsey on Sunday 26 August.

Several events are already at the semifinal stage with some quarterfinal matches still to be played and Ember are still well represented with entrants still in contention in five of the competitions –
Ladies Singles: Linda and Jackie have both reached the semifinal where they will play each other so Ember is already guaranteed a finalist in this event.
Ladies Triples: Jackie C, Pat R and Sylvia have reached the semifinal and will play against Lorna K, Val C and Mary G so another finalist is guaranteed in this event.
Mixed Pairs: We have two pairs in the quarterfinals with Dave B & Linda P away at Bishop Duppas and Jackie C & Mike C at home v Chertsey, both matches to be played by 1 Aug.
Mixed Triples: Jackie, John G and Mike are due to play an Oxshott triple in the quarterfinal.
Mixed Fours: Both our teams are in the semifinal. Dave B, Sylvia, Linda and Dick play Oatlands Park and Jenny B, Jackie, John G and Mike C play Egham. An all Ember final is still a possibility.

Please put Sunday 26th August at Chertsey in your diaries and attend to give our finalists some appreciated support if you can make it. Ember will be staging the 2019 finals on the August Bank Holiday Sunday.

After the first round has been completed Ember has 3 triples in the last 16.

We have been drawn against Weybridge in the last 16 and are awaiting their challenge.
