Competitive and Social Play

During the playing season from Easter Monday to the end of September, the Club runs various internal competitions which are open to everyone:

  • Open Singles
  • Handicap Singles
  • Handicap Doubles
  • Handicap Singles League
  • Handicap Golf Singles

The Club also plays in South East Croquet Federation competitions:

  • SECF ‘B’ and ‘S’ League Competition matches against other south-east clubs, home or away
  • SECF Team Doubles Tournament at Southwick (near Brighton)

Croquet is a popular social pastime, played by young and old alike, and the Club is keen to encourage players of all abilities, including those who may not wish to participate in competitions and tournaments.  Croquet is a game of skill rather than strength, and commonly played under a handicap scheme, so that players of all abilities, men and women, can compete on equal terms.

Croquet matches are normally played on a full-size lawn which measures 35 yards by 28 yards.  At Ember we have one full-size lawn and one half-size, which is very useful for coaching and practising.  Both lawns are available for members to arrange and pre-book their own matches at any time during the season, except when the lawns are required for mowing, maintenance and scheduled events such as coaching. Members are also welcome to play without pre-arrangement on Club Nights or at other times when the lawns are available.
